TMJ Disorder & Sleep Apnea Solutions

Jaw discomfort, clicking, morning headaches, snoring, or daytime fatigue can point to issues with the jaw joint (TMJ) or sleep-disordered breathing. We provide conservative TMJ care and custom oral appliance therapy (for appropriate candidates), and coordinate closely with physicians to help you breathe and feel better.

Note: A medical diagnosis for sleep apnea is made by a physician, often with a sleep study. We work collaboratively as part of your care team.

TMJ/TMD: signs to watch

  • Jaw pain, clicking, locking, or limited opening
  • Morning or tension headaches; facial muscle soreness
  • Tooth wear or clenching/grinding (bruxism)
  • Ear fullness, jaw fatigue while chewing

Our approach favors reversible and conservative therapy first.

Snoring & sleep apnea cues

  • Loud snoring or witnessed pauses in breathing
  • Dry mouth on waking, morning headaches
  • Daytime sleepiness, reduced focus
  • CPAP intolerance despite medical guidance

For qualifying patients, a mandibular advancement device can be an effective option.

Conservative TMJ care

We start with reversible therapies: custom stabilization splints, bite-force habit coaching, gentle jaw exercises, and coordination with physical therapy as needed. Our goal is symptom relief and function—without irreversible procedures.

Oral appliance therapy for OSA

For patients diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea—or those intolerant of CPAP—we design a custom, titratable oral appliance that holds the lower jaw forward to help maintain an open airway during sleep.

How care works at Mi Smile

  1. Screening & records: We review symptoms, take digital scans, and assess jaw function/airway.
  2. Physician collaboration: For sleep concerns, we coordinate with your physician; a sleep study is required for diagnosis.
  3. Custom device: We fabricate a splint (TMJ) or a mandibular advancement device (sleep) and guide gradual titration.
  4. Follow-up: We check comfort, efficacy, and bite stability; for OSA, a follow-up sleep study often verifies results.

Who’s a candidate?

Adults and some teens with TMJ symptoms or physician-diagnosed OSA who prefer conservative, device-based therapy.

Medical vs. dental coverage

TMJ splints may use dental benefits; OSA appliances may bill under medical—often requiring documentation and preauth. HSA/FSA welcome.

Whole-team care

We collaborate with your PCP, sleep physician, ENT, and physical therapist to support durable results.

TMJ & Sleep FAQs

TMJ vs. TMD—what’s the difference?

TMJ is the joint itself; TMD refers to disorders affecting the joint and muscles. We evaluate both structure and function.

Do you diagnose sleep apnea?

Diagnosis is made by a physician, often via sleep study. We screen, coordinate referrals, and provide oral appliance therapy when appropriate.

Can an appliance replace CPAP?

For many with mild to moderate OSA—or those CPAP-intolerant—oral appliances are a proven option. Your physician guides suitability and follow-up testing.

Will an appliance change my bite?

Minor bite changes are possible with long-term wear. We monitor fit and provide instructions to help maintain bite stability.

How long is treatment?

TMJ care varies by symptoms. Sleep appliances are worn nightly; titration and follow-up testing help optimize results.

Is it covered by insurance?

TMJ splints may be dental benefits; OSA appliances may bill medical with documentation. We’ll help you navigate benefits and HSA/FSA.
