Early Orthodontic Treatment for Kids (Phase 1)

Children’s smiles grow fast—so do their jaws and bite. Interceptive orthodontics uses gentle guidance during ages 7–10 to create space for adult teeth, improve bite relationships, and make future treatment simpler.

Signs your child may benefit

  • Early loss of baby teeth or delayed eruption of adult teeth
  • Mouth breathing, persistent thumb or finger habits
  • Crowding, crossbite, underbite, or open bite patterns
  • Jaw shifting or clicking when chewing
  • Speech concerns tied to tooth/jaw position

The first orthodontic check is recommended around age 7—earlier if you notice concerns.

Phase 1 vs. Phase 2

Phase 1 (early) focuses on growth guidance—creating room, correcting crossbites, and supporting healthy jaw development. Phase 2 (teen) fine-tunes the final alignment—often with shorter, more straightforward treatment thanks to Phase 1.

We’ll outline a path that may include braces or clear aligners later, if needed.

Common Phase 1 tools

Palatal expanders, space maintainers, limited braces/aligners, and habit-breaking appliances help guide growth and create space.

Airway & habits

We screen for mouth breathing, tongue posture, and thumb habits. Addressing these early supports stable results and comfort.

Kid-friendly visits

Most check-ins are quick. We explain each step in child-friendly language and coordinate around school and activities.

Timeline & cost

Many Phase 1 plans last 6–12 months, followed by a rest period while adult teeth erupt. We provide clear fees, verify insurance benefits, and offer flexible payment options.

Growth-Guided Results

Early guidance can widen arches, correct crossbites, and reduce crowding—setting the stage for easier teen treatment. Every child’s growth is unique; we’ll tailor the plan.

Before early treatment—posterior crossbite
Before: Crossbite
After early treatment—expanded arch and corrected crossbite
After: Arch widened, bite corrected
Before early treatment—crowding of front teeth
Before: Crowding
After early treatment—space created for adult teeth
After: Space for adult teeth
Before early treatment—anterior open bite with habit
Before: Open bite & habit
After early treatment—habit addressed and bite closure improved
After: Habit corrected, bite improved

Parents’ Top Questions

What age should my child see an orthodontist?

We recommend an evaluation around age 7, when adult incisors and first molars start to appear.

Does early treatment replace teen braces or aligners?

Not always. Phase 1 reduces complexity; many kids still benefit from a shorter, simpler Phase 2 later.

Will an expander or appliance be uncomfortable?

There can be mild pressure for a few days. We share child-friendly tips to keep them comfortable and confident.

How will this affect school and sports?

Most visits are brief and infrequent. For sports, we recommend a well-fitting mouthguard during contact activities.

Do you accept insurance and offer payment plans?

Yes—our team checks benefits and provides flexible options to fit your budget.

What about X-rays and safety?

We take radiographs only when necessary and follow standards to keep exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
